To everyone who got screwed by Calan:

Go ASAP to:
https://cardholder.paysystems.com/

Click on \"Cancel Repeat Charge\" so Calan will not get $$ anymore!

And I suggest you that you \"Request a refund\"

I personnaly requested a refund and Calan has now 3 days to answer to MyPaySystem. If they don\'t answer, I will automatically have my $ back!
A little victory....

Thanks SilentRage. I just emailed you with the info on the three domains that Calan Technologies registered for me and that I\'m trying to get back control of.

For future reference, this is what sean needs:

-Domain Name(s)
-First, Last Name
-Full Address
-Valid Email Address
-Phone Number

Both of the above requests are being processed.

I just noticed that someone named John Newton from Calan Domains has changed the domain registrant to himself from Sean Cahill. Does anyone know John - is he working with Sean? I just sent him an email explaining my situation and asking him to change the registrant for my URLs to me.

mwoolley wrote:At this point I would pay to re-register my URLs if that what it takes to get out of this mess  . I like my URLs and I can\'t believe CALANREG made themselves the registrant in addition to the administrative contact. Is that normal or ethical when someone pays to have a new URL registered?

It\'s not normal at all.  As for ethical, that\'s up to debate.  There\'s nothing wrong with a company registering domains for a person and setting themself up as the owner of that domain if that is apart of the contract.  If there is no written statement that domains you order through that company is owned by you however, they might be able to say it is their prerogative.  As far as I know the guy who came to me on behalf of CalanHost, he probably just did this without realizing what he\'s doing.  If a person asked him specifically to change the contact info, he probably would.  It\'s unprofessional, but I don\'t think he meant any wrong.  It\'s not a great excuse however.  It would just seem odd to me that somebody would come to me about some intermittent problem his clients are having (the concern) then suddenly ditch them.  I have a hunch something might have happened to him.

As a general rule though, don\'t register or host domains through web hosts.  It\'s not their area of expertise.

NALF -

I just found your message and hit the MyPaySystem; my charge was listed as a one-time only charge, but the \"Request a Refund\" was extremely helpful. Thanks for the tip; I owe you one!

As a quick follow-up, I\'ve also reported Sean Cahill to both the FCC and the BBB. It\'d be nice to get some official closure on this one.

Sean Cahill has since been in contact with me.  This is what he had to say:

\"About Calanhost, Our partner taking care of paying bills was not paying
them!! We other 2 guys concentrated on customer support and server
management did not see this coming.
I was away with my kids on spring break and when I got back.. no more
servers, our ISP unplugged and block access to the servers.
I had invested all my time and money on this project, I\'m sad for all
the customers Calan had + I was the one that mostly did all the customer
relations so my name is pointed out everywhere... I don\'t even have
access to any customer info to recover there domain names what so ever
as this info was on a backup also at our isp...
Anyways, I cried a few days then went looking for a job.
Now working for another company and now building a few servers for them.\"

Just imagine being in his position.  If there was a fire and my computer burned up with it, I would definately understand his anguish.
